ROAD RAVEN WIP2

Yesterday was a particularly productive day. I worked on three paintings at once.  This way while one is drying the other can be refined. I think they are competing with each other..

THE SECRET LIFE OF CROWS - WIP

These guys are twice as big as my last two whispering crows.  The board is 12 x 12. Again, the same technique - acrylic background with the crows added in oil when they dry.

ROAD RAVEN WIP1

The beginning of a new raven painting.  The claws will come later! The background effect is done by using wax between two opposing colors of paint.  In this instance the red was applied first, then the wax, and then the blue.  I was thinking about calling it "Raven Road Rage" but I don't think he looks angry enough!

RED MOON RISING - FINISHED

Oil on acrylic
Painted on solid wood door panel
10.5 x 18

This painting symbolises the harvest moon and the "Red Road".  To walk the Red Road is to know you stand on equal ground with all living things. It is to know that because you were born human, it gives you superiority over nothing. It is to know that every creation carries a Spirit, and the river knows more than you do, the mountains know more than you do, the stone people know more than you do, the trees know more than you do, the wind is wiser than you are, and animal people carry wisdom.

COUPLE OF CROWS FINISHED

Oil on acrylic background
17 x 17
Mounted on a painted board

Finished today!  Hope to have it in the gallery later this week.

COUPLE OF CROWS WIP3

COUPLE OF CROWS WIP2

Work is going fast on this painting.  My raven friends were back this morning sitting on a telephone pole right by the back fence line. Seems they found something to eat.  They were sitting on the pole the owls favor. Got word last night "Raven Magic" sold to a couple visiting the gallery. This means all but one of my raven series has sold.  No wonder they keep buzzing me!

A COUPLE OF CROWS

The beginning of a new painting.  I like playing off the colors of the crows - painting their feathers various colors of blue, purple and gray.  I normally start with the background in an acrylic wash and then do the main subject in oils. Refining comes later.

PINK-A-BOO RAVEN

Oil on canvas
Acrylic background
Pink wood frame on canvas
11" x 14"

This work is rather 'folksy' with the pink wooden frame attached directly onto the canvas. The background is a mixture of swirls and flowers.

RED MOON RISING

Oil on wood
Acrylic background
10.5" x 18"

This work is nearly done.  I was fortunate to find a series of small wooden doors and used them as my canvas.  The "red moon" was associated with the harvest and often called the "Corn Moon".  I am still thinking about putting some corn stalks in the foreground.

CROWING IN A CIRCLE

Isn't this precious?  I am not even sure if I am going to be able to part with it!  The frame is an old salvaged piece that I painted a warm pink.  The print has been antiqued and shows little cracks like it has been sitting around for years.  It is only about the size of a normal dinner plate.

PINK EYES - FINISHED

Untitled
Oil on acrylic background
18" X 23"
Painted on cradled board - mounted on board

While at the gallery on Saturday I finished this painting. It really needs another name besides "Pink Eyes". Hope I can think of something soon. I am going to take it to the gallery today or tomorrow. I have also produced some prints which are smaller. I have named similar paintings "Crowing Together". Since crows and ravens mate for life I think they make a good example of staying together.

RAVEN ON WOOD

So this is something new - I am painting him on a solid piece of wood.  Actually it is a cabinet door that was never used.  It doesn't have any holes in it anywhere.  I don't have to frame it because it's already framed!  This is a work in progress (WIP).  I am still thinking about the background.  Ideas?

PINK EYES

Now that the eyes have been added they are looking very cozy.  I will bring this down to the gallery on the 17th for a live demonstration.  I think I will finish it then.  But what should they be holding?  Maybe one should have a four leaf clover in honor of St. Paddy's Day. Any suggestions?

CROW COURAGE

This painting was done in oil over an acrylic background.  It was mounted on an old piece of wood and framed with oak.  A couple from Tuscon bought it last weekend but I was not at the gallery so unfortunately I did not meet them.  So glad it got a home!

RAVEN MAGIC

Raven is the bearer of magic and a harbinger or messages from beyond the cosmos. Messages that are beyond space and time are nestled in the midnight wings of the Raven and reveal themselves only to those who are worthy.

PINK

Started another pair of crows/ravens today.  This time there shall be plenty of pink!

THE EYES HAVE IT

Did somebody say eyes?  I took this painting to the gallery and used it for my demo last Saturday.

LIVE OIL PAINTING DEMO

Last month I brought this painting to the Arts Prescott Gallery where I demonstrated my technique as well as explained my personal inspiration.  I will be continuing this demonstration and answering questions on Saturday afternoon March 10 and 17th.  Look for me around 11:00 until 3:00 in the afternoon.  The Arts Prescott Gallery is located in downtown Prescott near the Courthouse Square at 134 S. Montezuma Street.  Look forward to seeing you there!

FOND FAREWELL

The Heard Museum Indian Market was this weekend in Phoenix Arizona. My sister and I had a great time and met lots of interesting people in our booth. But it is goodbye to the "Spirit Guide" which has been one of my favorite paintings. A nice couple from Phoenix took him home. He will reside in their foyer and be around for many years to greet all who enter the house. I am happy for him but also sad to see him go. I hope to see him again someday!
